Mormon Writers

Something I've noticed. A lot of writers I follow are Mormons. Many of them live in Utah (naturally). What is it about Mormonism that creates so many writers? And most of you seem to be YA/Scifi writers. What's with that? Please respond. I'm curious.

You're right that there's a large group of them online. Many are friends in real life as well.

Hello,

I'm not a Mormon, and i live in the UK, however I do write speculative fiction...

I have no idea why you are attracting lots of us though ;-)

Have a good weekend.

Ha! Okay, I'm a Mormon and a writer, so I guess I better put in my two bits.

I was at The Life, The Universe, and Everything writing seminar here in Utah one year and someone made the comment (and I'm probably going to botch this up) that Mormons write good speculative because we believe in things that others believe are impossible. We believe in the power of God, which some people would look at as magic.

Maybe it all comes from the 'With God, all things are possible' mentality and we're open to the possibilities. I'm not saying that vampires and werewolves are possible, but what would God do with them if they were? Sounds like a writing prompt to me...

Ultimately I think it boils down to a strong urge to develop our God given talents. Where others might dally with writing as a hobby, we believe in developing our talents, including writing, until we do it well. Like all religions you'll get varying degrees of people, but mostly we're like everybody else: Trying to make ourselves better and find something we enjoy doing.

Great answer, Anthony. I think you've got something there.
I, too, believe we are required to use our talents. Even if we have fewer talents (or less talent)than others have been given, burying it is not an option. There is a need in this world for everyone's talents.
